一般瓷球分为研磨类陶瓷球和填料陶瓷球，不同种类的陶瓷球有不同的物理化学特性，这就决定了它们在不同行业的用途。
研磨类瓷球分为碳化硅研磨瓷球、微晶中铝研磨瓷球、高铝研磨瓷球。一般来讲含铝量60%—65%划为中铝球，含铝量75%—80%为中高铝球，含铝量90%以上为高铝球。其中高铝球又细分为90瓷、92瓷、95瓷和99瓷。99瓷由于其极高的生产成本而很少有大型厂家大批量制造，目前主要为部分特种陶瓷厂通过手工制作。
主要陶瓷球种类：
1、氮化硅陶瓷球（Si3N4）
2、氧化锆陶瓷球（ZrO2）
3、碳化硅陶瓷球(SiC)
4、高纯氧化铝陶瓷球（Al2O3）
制作方法：
1、通过挤压法成型
2、通过团粒法成型
3、通过液压硬膜成型
陶瓷球成型方法常见压制球和滚制球两种。由于工艺过程的差异，导致成型、焙烧后的球石内部晶体结构不同，密实程度和抗冲击的能力也不一样，通过多次、反复的破坏性试验，我们发现：在研磨水泥物料的过程中，相同材质、相同规格的陶瓷球，压制球破损率低于滚制球。
